Academic Support

Program Description

Academic Support is a supplemental program. Reading and math instruction is provided primarily in the child’s regular classroom. Academic Support staff provide additional instruction which complements the classroom program, targeting the area(s) in which the student will most benefit.

The goal of the support service is for the child to reach grade level competency.

Students are re-assessed several times a year to determine their progress and to identify when they might transition from support services.

Parent Involvement

Parents are encouraged to become involved with the program by participating in events designed for parents, assisting their children in reading and math activities, and providing feedback on the Academic Support Services program.

If you have concerns about your child, please speak to his/her classroom teacher or contact the Academic Support Teacher at his/her school.

Procedures

Referral

Although all of our students are screened for academic performance, a teacher, parent or guardian may refer a student for
Academic Support Services at any time. The classroom teacher will collect evidence to document concerns. This may include, but is not limited to, standardized test data, anecdotal records, observations, and classroom assessments or assignments.

Eligibility Criteria

After the referral process, the Academic Support Teacher gathers additional information, conducting additional student assessment data in the area of concern. Because the intent is to provide early intervention services, students in Grades 1 and 2 who score approximately six (6) months below grade level are eligible for support services. After a student is assessed and his/her needs are determined, an Academic Support Team convenes to review the data and determine the appropriate services.
